Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

You can also:

  • fill out a repeat prescriptions request form
  • bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6.30pm

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email with the exception of elderly, vulnerable or very young patients.

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

  • phone our pharmacist after 10am on 01256 702371.
  • fill in our medication query form.

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.

Repeat Prescriptions

Your GP surgery does not automatically issue repeat prescriptions for you and cannot issue medication any quicker than the time stated, even if you consider it as urgent.

It is your responsibility to ensure you have enough medication, ordering within plenty of time so you don't run out.

Although we aim to have prescriptions ready within this time scale, your local Pharmacy may have their own policy on collection times, once they have received the prescription from us.

You can order your repeat prescription online HERE

NHS App

Registering for Internet Prescription Request

To register for the Internet Prescription Request system, please bring your photographic evidence (e.g. driving licence with photo or passport) to either Old Basing or Odiham Surgery.  We will then print details to enable you to register to order your repeat prescriptions via the internet.

Electronic Prescriptions

Prescriptions are now signed, sent and processed electronically.

You choose a pharmacy or dispenser to dispense all your prescriptions. When you get a prescription, it will be sent electronically to the dispenser you have chosen. You can collect then your medicines or appliances or they will be delivered dependent on the dispenser you have chosen without having to hand in a paper prescription.

Paper prescriptions will continue to be available in special circumstances, but almost all prescriptions will be processed electronically.

Medication Reviews

Medication reviews are important.

They help us to provide you with the correct on-going treatment and to monitor your condition.

Many reviews can now be completed or part completed by the patient using our HEALTH PODS in the waiting areas which feedbacks the results  to your clinician.

Some reviews can often be done by telephone, others need you to attend the surgery.

Get in touch with our reception team who can help you.

Private Prescriptions

In some situations, we are not allowed to issue prescriptions on the NHS. A private prescription will then be issued for which a charge may be payable and you will pay the full cost of the medication at the pharmacy.

If you have seen a specialist on a private basis and have been given a private prescription, we cannot convert the prescription into an NHS one.

HRT prescription prepayment certificate

If you pay for NHS prescribed HRT medicine 3 or more times in 12 months, an HRT PPC could save you money.

Each item on an NHS prescription usually costs £9.90. You can buy an HRT PPC for a one-off payment of £19.80 (the cost of two single items).

The HRT PPC covers an unlimited number of certain HRT medicines for 12 months, regardless of why they are prescribed.

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

The current prescription charge is £9.90 per item

Prescription charges are for each item not each prescription. For example, if your prescription has 3 medicines on it you will have to pay the prescription charge 3 times.

Some items are always free, including contraception and medicines prescribed for hospital inpatients.

If you know you'll have to pay for a lot of NHS prescriptions, it may be cheaper to buy a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC).
